Why are water quality standards important? 

Having good water quality is important for the protection and enrichment of fish, wildlife, and the human population of Michigan.

How does the Kalamazoo River Superfund area rate in regards to water quality?

Due to contamination, the Kalamazoo River Superfund site has lead to fishing restrictions and advisories, some beach closings, and wildlife degradation. 

How is the water quality in the Great Lakes?

Water quality in the Great Lakes became a national matter in 1969 when the Cuyahoga River (which ultimately flows into Lake Erie) caught on fire due to pollution.  Since then, the Great Lakes Water Quality Act and Clean Water act have shown some success by showing healthy fish populations, less waste is flowing into the great lakes, and better sewers and sewage treatment facilities. Several contaminants can still be found in the Great Lakes.

What affects the water quality?

Humans affect the water more than anything. Industry, large towns with high populations, and agriculture tend to cause more damage to the waterways than anything else.
